Julius

Julius is a NYC-based photographer, who also occasionally gets in front of the camera as a model and actor. He specializes in fashion, portrait, art, lifestyle, event, and street photography, but really just appreciates quality visuals across all spectrums with his work representing his world. He’s worked extensively with personal, independent clients, as well as creating campaigns for brands such as Uber and Kangol.

The lovely model photographed, I can see you’ve shot photos together before. Is there an interesting story there together of how you work together? Or how you came to work together? What was the inspiration behind the photos?

I’ve known Sonya for over 10 years. We just started frequently collaborating due to mutual interests in art, etc. I’ve always been a fan of colorful lights, neon, etc so I just wanted to use that to match the color of the watches. I also own one of those lightbulb sets that can change every color you can think of, so wanted to take advantage of that.

What inspires you when doing photo shoots?

Sometimes it’s the environment and sometimes I just want to play with color combinations.

How do you choose who you photograph? Even if it’s just friends!

Sometimes I try to use someone who can fit a certain aesthetic or even a backdrop I have in mind. But scheduling anything with someone else can be hard, so it usually just depends on who says yes.

What’s your favorite/most rewarding part of the creative process?

When the images match what you visioned.

How do you deal with a creative block?

Going to museums and galleries help. And then sometimes you just have to visit a new place.

NY is clearly an inspirational place for you and a general hub for great creative talent – why do you think this is? If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?

NYC is just a unique city compared to the rest of the US. I think the size alone always brought so many people and from that diversity came so much talent. As far as anywhere else, I think it might have to be somewhere overseas.

If you could photograph anyone in the world – who would it be?

Definitely Rihanna.

You photograph, model and act – where do you feel most comfortable: in front of or behind the camera? Which did you start out doing first?

I started out behind the camera first, which has the most comfort and can be the easiest. I like being in front of the camera as well, but it can also lead to awkwardness & you are less in control.
